Luini’s Panzerotti lives up to the hype

When it comes to food in Italy – pasta and pizza reign supreme. When it comes to food in Milan there is only one lunchtime snack you need to seek out – Panzerotti!

Luini PanzerottiAs the story goes Giuseppina Luini came to Milan from Puglia with her family in 1949 and opened the LUINI Bakery we still see today on Via Santa Radegonda, 16. The Panzerotto (also known as a Pizza Pocket so my Canadian friends tell me!), is best described as a smaller version of the calzone with a softer dough. The savory pastry although originally from the region of Puglia (the heel of Italy) has truly been embraced by the Milanese.

Although initially skeptical of Luini’s panzerottis this is one of those magical travel suggestions which lives up to its profound and heightened reputation. At around €2.50 a piece you will not find a yummier or cheaper lunchtime bite around the Duomo. Go traditional with the Mozzarella and Pomodoro or be adventurous with the Spinaci and Ricotta, whichever you choose you will not be disappointed.

Where

Via Santa Radegonda,16
20121 Milano

Close to the Duomo, walk down the road to the right of Rinascente and go pass the Odeon cinema to reach your goal.

When

Big queues during the lunchtime rush but generally fast moving. Closed Sundays.

Why

It is my must-eat visit in Milan! And because for €2.50 a piece you won’t find anything near the centre as nice, as fresh or as cheap.

Plus there is a really good ice cream shop opposite for dessert!
